Water District Engineering Position

The Kennebec Water District (KWD) is seeking candidates to fill a newly created engineering position.  Actual duties and responsibilities will be dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

KWD serves approximately 9,000 customers in the greater Waterville area in central Maine. KWD’s original infrastructure dates to the 1880’s (some of which is still in operation today).  KWD’s assets include more than 170 miles of buried water lines, 635 fire hydrants, over 2,000 main line valves, a 12 million gallon per day surface water treatment plant, three pump stations and three water storage tanks.

The responsibilities of the Engineering Department include:

  • Use of surveying equipment for in-house projects
  • Water main replacement design
  • Construction administration and inspection
  • Engineering review of new services and water system expansion
  • Review of KWD construction projects
  • Design of water system modifications and upgrades
  • Oversight of consulting engineering services
  • GIS data collection
  • Asset management
  • Maintenance of asset records
  • Engineering studies and evaluations
  • Fleet management
  • Facility maintenance
  • Oversight of various contractors working on KWD infrastructure.

The selected candidate will be involved in many, if not all, of these responsibilities at one level or another.  KWD’s Engineering Department currently has the following positions: Engineering Manager, Engineering Technician, and Fleet and Facility Coordinator.

KWD has recently increased its annual financial investment for replacing aging infrastructure.  Additionally, KWD is investing in an asset management program in 2021.  These changes necessitate additional engineering resources in the Engineering Department.

This position offers the opportunity to be involved in all phases of infrastructure development, including site work to investigate existing site conditions through construction inspection.  Excellent communication and organization skills are required for this position.

KWD is seeking a candidate that is currently licensed as a professional engineer or is on track to become licensed.  At a minimum, candidates shall have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and received the Engineering-Intern Certification from the State of Maine Board of Professional Engineers or have met all criteria to earn this certification.

The Kennebec Water District offers a competitive salary and a generous benefit package including paid vacation and sick leave, employer contributed pension plan (Maine Public Employees Retirement System), medical and dental insurance.  Salary offer will be dependent upon qualification and experience.
